Chemistry – Inevitable In Our Daily Life

International year of chemistry is celebrated in Sourashtra Girls Hr Sec School, Madurai on 30th November in the school premises. This year 2011, the 100th anniversary of the award of the Nobel prize in chemistry to Mme curie will also provide an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of women to science and also the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical societies IACS which was succeeded by IUPAC a few years later. Its aim is to increase the public appreciation and understanding of chemistry, increase young people’s interest in science and generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry. says the president of IUPAC professor Jung-II Jin, This celebration is supported by UNESCO.

So the school correspondent Tmt.M.P.V.K.Sitabai and Committee members, Headmistress Mrs. T.V.Suganthimai and chemistry department of Sourashtra Girls Hr Sec School together decided to create an awareness about chemistry among young children. They decided to conduct a fair on chemistry – inevitable in our daily life. Students from all standards participated eagerly in the fair. Nearly 250 students with 150 exhibits enthusiastically explained the basic principles in chemistry related to our daily life.

The History of chemistry started with the search for philosopher’s stone and elixir of life. First chemist in the ancient period was a lady and the development was enhanced by the discovery of scented oils & perfumes. Later the Muslims contribution to chemistry was followed by Greeks, Germans & English. These were explained by the students using charts. VI,VII & VIII Std children explained the concepts of mixtures, compounds, exothermic & endothermic reactions, purification and chemistry reactions for fun.
